Turning versus flipping
Rotation keeps the shape
Turning a shape never changes which side its bumps are on, relative to each other.
A mirror image is different
A flipped shape can look almost the same, but no amount of turning will make it match.
Use an anchor
Pick one distinctive corner and follow where it goes. It is quicker than turning the whole shape.
What the scores mean
IQ scores are set so the average is 100 and two thirds of people land between 85 and 115.
| IQ | Range | Share of people |
|---|---|---|
| 130+ | Very high | 2% |
| 120–129 | High | 7% |
| 110–119 | Above average | 17% |
| 90–109 | Average | 49% |
| 80–89 | Below average | 16% |
| 70–79 | Low | 6% |
| ≤ 69 | Very low | 2% |
Shares follow the normal curve with a standard deviation of 15, the convention most modern tests use.

Questions
What does a spatial test measure?
Your ability to picture and manipulate shapes mentally, a skill used in engineering, design, surgery and many sports.
Are men better at spatial tests?
Studies find small average differences on some rotation tasks, but they shrink with practice and individual differences are far larger.
